Because part of a fluid that is forced to move carries along to some extent adjacent parts, viscosity may be thought of as internal friction between the molecules such friction opposes the development of velocity differences within a fluid. ![]() Molasses, for example, has a greater viscosity than water. The reciprocal of the viscosity is called the fluidity, a measure of the ease of flow. ![]() Viscosity, resistance of a fluid (liquid or gas) to a change in shape, or movement of neighbouring portions relative to one another. Thus, upon heating, liquids flow more easily, whereas gases flow more sluggishly. The viscosity of liquids decreases rapidly with an increase in temperature, and the viscosity of gases increases with an increase in temperature.
